A project I've had in the works for quite some time is a story called "Miss Doomsday". It's the story of a girl who wakes up and the world keeps ending. Her life moves forward each day, but every day ends with a new apocalypse.
Something I've been struggling with big time is the look of the characters in "Miss Doomsday". Often in my work, I'm torn between realism and cartooning, the former because it's so beautiful and artistic and the latter because of its expressiveness. However, of late, I've been leaning toward a more cartoony approach to the series. One of the major problems I've had with my other comic, "Opey the Warhead", is that it took so long to finish a page. It took me about a week to draw one page. I want to produce "Miss Doomsday" at a faster pace, and a cartoony style would facilitate that. Also, I may draw the pages in pencil (although, if I submit it to any comic companies, I'll ink them). Here is a character sheet of the main star of "Miss Doomsday", Anne Hedonia, who suffers through the multiple apocalypses. This is a new design I'm pondering using. It's along the lines of my comic strips "Pennies from Heaven" or "Emily". Compare that to earlier, more realistic designs seen here: [link] and here: [link] One design of the new designs is I won't get to draw Anne in the sexy manner I could with the more realistic version (I was planning a nice underwear scene, too, darn it). As I'm not 100% certain which designs to use (I'm seriously leaning to the new cartoonier version), I'd love for any input from the guys and gals out there in DA land. CommentsHuh. This version looks a little chibi ...
My take on all of this is "How much do you want your readers to feel for the character?" That should help you decide how detailed/cartoony you want to draw her and the rest. -- Oh! and it's time for the TF-a-thon! May 25th to (whenever I finish day 6) [link] Come and get changed! Day 1 is done! [link] Day 2 coming soon. I totally share your dilemma of realistic/cartoonier, and I decided to give simplification a shot. First because of time reasons, like you mentioned, but then I figured it's got its charm. And for comics is totally well suited to go in a cartoonier direction...
I was just looking at the 2 designs, and while I like the realistic one, I actually prefer this one. It's more iconic, easy to recognize, and more expressive. Just my opinion! |
