Opey Page 6 aka The Connection by cluedog Opey Page 6 aka The Connection by cluedog
This is the sixth page of my webcomic "Opey the Warhead".

It's already posted in my gallery as "The Connection", but since it's the sixth page, I've renamed it and reuploaded it so it follows chronologically Opey Page 5. I'd delete "The Connection", but I wouldn't want those who added it to their favorites in the past to have to go through all the trouble of doing so again, if they so desired.

Uh, great way of changing the mood of the story from humor to melancholy. It works perfectly, and is absolutely seamless. You rule, man :)

Thanks! My inspiration is the Charlie Chaplin films. He was always able to blend beautifully drama and comedy into one bittersweet concoction. It's something I've been trying to recreate in my own works.

Wow. That is one heck of a page. So much detail in such a small space.

Beautiful stuff Zac. So Idiosyncratic of you. In my opinion you have fashioned your own style, a signature that is recognizable. I could see your art in a line up, and distinguish which is your work (I believe).

Really great work here.

Thanks, Fladam!

I strive to be different in my work. Admittedly, it's a hard road to travel, because people tend to adore the familiar or that which is already established. It can disheartening at times, really.

I totally agree, which is why I love the way you create imagery. Many folks try to replicate other artists styles, and although we are all inspired and influenced, I think individualism is crucial. Artists like Michael Turner (RIP), Adam Hughes, Kevin O'Neil, Eddie Campbell (From Hell) all have incredibly distinct styles which are different and distinguished.

Actually, I guess the late Mike Turner is less different now because so many other artists have mimicked his style, but he did set a precedent for younger artists to base their blossoming styles upon. Consciously or sub.

Point is that with a saturated market, being great at art isn't enough to get noticed anymore. Being great and distinctive is the only way to get acknowledged. Which is why I see you going far because you are distinct and unique. Your work on Opey is superb :)

I just had a thought. And I wondered if you probably know the oldest game called Final Fantasy VII - about Seporith's mother who was treated in same way as unnatural experiment. I wondered if you got this similar idea from the game too?

Final Fantasy 7 wasn't the influence for Opey's mom, I must confess. Still, I'm a fan of the earlier games.

Ah. Right. So where did your idea come from to develop this page, mind me asking?

It was an idea that just popped in my head, although, if I recall correctly, "Ghost in the Shell" (the film version) may have been an influence on the look of the Japanese girl as well as some of the techno-doodads in the background.

I wanted the reader to get a glimpse of Opey's mom, and make her appearance jarring. Opey and his Dad's conversation is completely interrupted by an entire page of her.

"The Connection" took me a long time to draw, given all of the technology and machinery I had to draw. I'm glad, though, that the emotion still came through.

Thank you for the compliment.

Thank you for favoriting "The Connection" twice. I actually thought about not posting "The Connection" again as page 6 because I didn't want to confuse people about whether this was a new page or not. Nonetheless, I felt that it would be more confusing if people had to click on a link in the comments section of Page 5 to see page 6 (The Connection), or had to dig way back in my gallery to see the next page after page 5.

I appreciate you reading "Opey the Warhead", and adding page 6 to your favorites. Opey is my personal favorite comic story to work on, because of the various weird things going on it.

That page took me forever to finish. I felt the strange compulsion to feel practically every millimeter with little gizmos and bits of machinery. I have to be crazy. :)

Thanks for the compliments, and for faving "Page 6" as well.

PS. I really like your new photo of the demolition of the building. I love how you captured the movement of the dust plumes and rubble as it descends downward. As always, looking forward fo more of your photos (but no rush...true art can't be rushed :) ).
